An exercise in collecting portmanteaus that may or may not already be prevalent in our currently ridicuwesome vernacular. portmanteau: blend: a new word formed by joining two others and combining their meanings REALTIONSHIP (pron: reel-shun-ship) real + relationship ¤ The ‘real’ in realtionship is meant to be sarcastic. Or ironic. Or just comical. But certainly not TRUTH. This word creation is based upon a simple typo in a g-chat conversation (where most good thoughts/words/brilliances occur), and followed the word ‘stupid.’ The fact that I am a diligent editor, but that this was misspelled is probably the greatest indication of how I feel about relationships at this moment. There’s been lots of writing about this generation’s incapacity to participate in relationships, due mostly to our tendency to ‘hang out’ (i.e. get it on) with our co-crushers rather than engage in any form of real courtship or commitment. While those in a relationship go on weekend getaways to Niagara and shop at Ikea to pick out the piece of furniture which will incite a ‘spat’ (NOT a fight, obvi!), realtionshippers barely make plans for the next weekend. They DO know, however, that their co-realtionshipper is definitely the person they want to share that duvet with to cover [...]

Viral Video Viaduct – Save Picnicface Special

Quickies

VVV

Whimsy

We’re hard-pressed for original broadcast comedic content in Canada. Unless you count Corner Gas as revolution in television, we haven’t really done much in the ways of progressive comedy since The Kids in the Hall… Or Due South, depending where you come from. Regardless, it should go without saying that when we have it, we should embrace well done, obscene, original humour. While it may not be surprising, CTV doesn’t believe this. If the ratings aren’t there, there’s always the CBC. They’re adequately funded, right? Meaning, if there’s anything to be taken away from the tumultuous existence of Arrested Development, it’s that without instant success, there’s no hope for a show to catch on. Such is the case with Picnicface. The most recent example of something that “could have gone somewhere” that is now going nowhere. Where would they draw the line? In North Carolina that line has now been clearly drawn, right between incest and homosexuals, the [...]

Central & Remote: May 11th – 13th

Central & Remote

Friday May 11th AIDSWOLF FINAL SHOW | The Garrison After nearly ten years of being a band and ful-ltime touring musicians, the members of Montréal’s AIDS Wolf are putting this one down. Yannick Desranleau, Chole Lum and Alexander Moskos have been the last word in noise and anti-music for a long, long time. Always outspoken and unapologetic for their abrasive music and opinions about what good music is, this has been a way of life for them. It may seem absurd to many that this trio who defy rhythm, melody and lyricism would have such strong convictions on what music is or should be, but they were 100% serious in their assertions. It seems that the burden creating their vision for the future of music finally took its toll on the group; they’re over as of this Friday. For just as long as they’re been bandmates, Yannick and Chole have also been the screen-print duo known as Séripop, handling the gig posters for Labelmates and like-minded bands the world over. More recently they’ve moved into installation art, so don’t worry, they’ll be keeping it weird in one form or another. Vegans do not eat or use any animal products, including ‘eggs and dairy’, which is ironic since that sounds kind of like “legs are hairy”, which they usually are (they are hippies afterall – see previous dirty words). On its own, there would be nothing wrong with maintaining a strict diet of twigs and shrubbery. However, most vegans do so with a holier than thou attitude that begs for some form of Human Cruelty. An example of this douchbagery can be found in Toronto’s Kensington Market at Herbivore, where they refuse service to anyone wearing fur. Apparently they’ve never noticed that 80% of Torontonians walk around wearing fox-fur trimmed Canada Goose jackets year-round. The only saving grace for these rodent-like humans is their tendency to be equally enthusiastic about their yoga practice, opening up the door for a slew of sexual positions that are unavailable to the masses. They do not, however, swallow… animal protein and whatnot. vēgən Noun 1. “I thought that Jessica was the most worthless waste of human being possible, then realized I was wrong when I found our she became a [...]

No Good News – Black is Back

N.G.N.

Rants

Lock up your daughters! Conrad Black is back in town (Dammit, Séamus, I said cue Boys Are Back In Town)! Now that Conrad Black is released from prison and returned to Canada, the question of the moment is whether he can, or should, regain the Canadian citizenship he renounced in order to accept a British peerage. And so begins human rights activist Peter Worthington’s opinion on the release of Baron Black of Crossharbour from Federal Correctional Institution, Miami on May 4th, aptly titled “Black’s voice will be heard: Worthington”. If anyone can get the blackshirts on the side of the stuffed shirt, it’s Worthington. Right? I mean, without Worthington’s fearless leadership, Ezra Levant wouldn’t be able to celebrate “Human Achievement Hour” with these low rent ads that give new meaning to the phrase “waste of electricity”. It’s like Levant is a left-wing activist hell-bent on eroding the right wing from the inside by making them agree to such mouth-breathing, pinheaded schemes that anyone who managed to graduate from Junior high goes running to an NDP meeting just so they can talk to someone about The Hunger Games, because hey, that at least requires reading.
