Collins Talks Comedy With Tom Henry & David Dineen-Porter

Recently, I sat down with Tom Henry and David Dineen-Porter to chat about the second anniversary of their comedy show Don’t Get Bored Of Us And Leave, which has been described as “Bizarre”, “hosted by Torontans” and “excusable”. It got a little out of hand.

Matt Collins

I was hoping we could start by talking about your booking concept, because that seems like an important part of the show.

David Dineen-Porter

Booking concept?

We use Google Maps to find where people live and book them based on the numerals visible on street view. It’s very straightforward. If the sum of the numerals is odd, then we divide the sum by the number of digits of all the numerals combined, and multiply that by the median. If the number is more than Heisman’s numeral, then we don’t book… we just don’t book that person.

Tom Henry

Wow, very heady stuff.

DDP

Just basic stuff really, for me.

MC

What kind of audience have you been trying to build? Is there a community in mind?

David

That’s a tough one.

Tom

We didn’t have a crowd in mind, but the crowd we ended up with is really hip, which is good. I always like to wear a cool shirt to the show, and I think they appreciate that.

David

Tom’s being sarcastic. Our crowd is really stupid.

Tom

David wears the same cream button up every month, and so they like him a little less.

David

…which is perfect for our comedy. Cream is a popular tone outside of the Danforth.

Tom

Maybe back in ’04.

David

You’re out of touch with the common man. You wear green.

Tom

Hmm, guess Che was out of touch with the common man too. Okay, if you say so.

David

Uh, yeah, the common man yearns to be oppressed..

MC

Is that Nietzsche? Would you say the show is “bookish”?

David

No. It’s very accessible. It’s just two funny guys being silly to make people laugh. If you like a lot of just “I’m laughing” comedy, then you’ll like our setlist. It covers all the hits.

Tom

I prefer the word ‘bookly’.

David

We’re not literati, we’re very down to earth guys, fiscal conservatives.

Our motto is “you broke it, you bought it”

Tom

Just a couple of guys who sat down and started a comedy show, because it was clear that Mcguinty wasn’t gonna do anything about it.

David

He basically stole an election with a billion dollar giveaway that he cancelled, costing me and mine a tax dollar. I say, McGuinty, Wynn, you break it, you bought it, and that’s it. And that’s it!

MC

Do you have any surprises for the big anniversary show? Special guests?

David

We don’t know what you’re talking about? What anniversary show?

Tod, do you know about this?

Matt Collins

The second anniversary of you show, of Don’t Get Bored Of Us and…

David

Each unique book mark is a portrait of a performer at Don’t Get Bored of Us and Leaves 2nd YEAR anniversary and cake party.

Tom

How did you know how to say that link? I think everyone in this coffee shop would like to know.

David

Click the link to find out how it’s said.

MC

I know David likes babies, and Tom does not. How do you guys reconcile a difference like that after such a long time?

David

I think as Tom hits his 20s he’s going to start liking babies more.

MC

You want to jump in on this topic, Tom?

I guess not. David, congratulations on winning Best Male Standup in Now’s Reader’s Poll. Is there anything else you guys wanted to add?

David

Loads. Our show is not about who is or is not a nerd. We don’t discriminate against nerds. Tom and I are obviously not nerds, [and] we don’t want to be nerds, but if you’re a nerd, come anyway.

You might like it. There’s a nerd section at the back. I feel like we can talk forever in a funny way, but the truth is, Tom was nominated for the Canadian Comedy Award, I won the (slightly more) prestigious NOW Toronto poll, we’re both in our prime. So, the show’s great.

Don’t Get Bored Of Us And Leave celebrates 2 years of forward thinking, boundary pushing, creative comedy on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 at The Ossington (62 Ossington).
