Central & Remote: February 24th -26th

A round up of the best/weirdest things to do this weekend in Toronto…

Friday February 24th

Daps Records was established in 2009 by Daniel Lee and April Aliermo of Hooded Fang and artist/manager Ian Chai. Lee and Aliermo, along with Airick Woodhead of Doldrums, make up Phèdre, a project that sprang from a summer spent in an attic. A NSFW homoerotic (or just plain eroctic) video with mythological and sticky imagery has meant music outlets like Pitchfork and Gorilla vs. Bear are taking notice. Daps’ roster also includes surf-gazers Odonis Odonis, duo Moon King (Daniel Woodhead, brother to Airick, and Maddy Wilde, both formerly of Spiral Beach), Tonkapuma and Hut.

This Friday Daps will host the first in a what could be a series of Revues. The night will include Phèdre, Hooded Fang, Doldrums, Moon King and L CON. Hosting is the Great Hall (1087 Queen West), doors at 8:30 pm. Tickets are $10 available at Rotate This and Soundscapes, $12 at the door.

Also happening Friday…

- Outdoor Adventure Show

- Les Sexareenos (ft Mark Sultan of King Khan & the BBQ) w/ Marvelous Darlings, The Rats of Spring & The Sphinxs at the Horseshoe

- Hirut Hoot: Comedy at Hirut Restaurant w/ Winston Spear, Kevin MacDonald, Scott McCrickard, Ron Sparks

- Eliot Fisk at Koerner Hall

- Bart B More at the Hoxton

- The Elwins with The Meligrove Band + The Bicycles at the Burroughes

- Kingdom and Dubbel Dutch at Dim Sum King

Saturday February 25th

I feel that if you post about your birthday or regular Friday night house party on the internet, especially somewhere as public as the blogTO events page, you deserve to have someone like me advertise it even more. Any time I see a posting like that it reminds me of the German girl who had 15 000 people RSVP to her Sweet Sixteen on Facebook; in that case 1400 complete strangers showed up. Maybe I aspire to help create that level of mayhem. Lord knows, I’ve shown up to things like this myself.

In the spirit of being a jerk I say, why not show up to Larry and Lauren’s Stag & Doe this Saturday! I mean, they’re holding it at a Royal Canadian Legion hall. What could be more perfect? Think of it is a pre-wedding crash.

If you’re not into being a jerk and making mischief consider attending some of these other, more inherently interesting events:

- Women’s arm wrestling for charity at 751 Lounge

- Board game jam: Make a board game in 48 hours at George Brown College

- Hook N Sling at the Hoxton

- August Burns Red, Silverstein at the Sound Academy

- Mona at the Mod Club

- Out Of This Spark 5th Anniversary ft. Forest City Lovers, Forest City Lovers , Snowblink , Snailhouse, Octoberman, at the Tranzac

- Scud Mountain Boys at Lee’s Palace

- The Spits and TV Ghost at the Silver Dollar

- Bloor-Yorkville IceFest

- Beethoven and Your Brain Part II

- Subspace Covenant at the Great Hall

- The Revenge at Wrongbar

- Monsters of Mock at the Rockpile

Sunday February 26th

- Toronto Postcard Club hosts Old Postcard Show at the Old Mill Inn

- Papier Mâché Puppet Workshop at Open Door Design

- Crosswires #1: JULIE DOIRON, the Pinecones, Tres Bien Ensemble EP Release

- Small Press Toronto presents Mouse City Calling at Revival

Yuli’s PP [Artist Profile]

About the Author: Yuli was born at the exact moment in 1986 when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded and rained down on the ocean. As a child she believed this meant she was destined for greatness in the realm of space travel and radioastronomy. Nothing remotely as awesome as that has happened so far. Instead Yuli, at the age of 18, relocated from Calgary to Ottawa where she studied photography, life sciences and graphic design before moving to Toronto. [More by Yuli]
