I write these words in the manor, the Hitch would have wanted; devoid of the cheap sentimentality and false platitudes offered up by the parties of God during Eulogies. He is not in Heaven, nor Hell. He will not be reincarnated or “move on” to some new, celestial plane of existence. The only claim he has to immortality is through his pen. A claim which if judged by its merits possesses far more credibility than the offensive myths propagated by the generational cults of ignorance and stupidity. If there’s anything truly transcendent within the quantum field we inhabit, part of that phenomenon manifests itself within the quality of Hitchen’s prose, which bears hardly a trace “of the stamp of our lowly origins”.
I have not had time to digest the news, I can barely organize my thoughts, except to say the following: the void Hitchen’s voice has left in the global discourse is truly massive. There are few who were fit to Walk with the King. He will be missed and wherever the parties of God are spewing their nonsense he will be needed.
Hitch was perhaps the most influential, unapologetic and articulate advocate for Atheism the modern world has ever known. If the list starts with Lucretius and continue on to Spinoza, Hume, Marx and Darwin, it will certainly end with Christopher Hitchens.
Hitchen’s was an Athiest’s atheist. A role model for activist assholes. Rude, outrageously brilliant, unpredictable and mostly right.
Everyday, those who carry water for their respective Gods are insisting that their pseudo-science be taught in schools, that homosexuals can`t get married, that women don`t have rights over their own bodies, that sick people shouldn`t have access to the fruits of stem cell research and that they somehow occupy the high moral ground… all while they fuck little boys, crash planes into buildings and mutilate the genitalia of infants.
In the ongoing battle between the rational and fanatics, Hitchen`s was our very own predator drone; a highly sophisticated piece of technology capable of annihilating anything stupid enough to identity itself as an enemy. One by one the Rabbis, Priests and Imams lined up only to have their arguments eviscerated, their fallacies exposed and the absurdity of their delusions revealed to be just that.
I literally am too in shock to write anything even marginally coherent, so I`ll close with a quote from the man himself. And such distinctions are important. Hitch, for all his brilliance was just a man; human, mortal, flawed and fallible.
“Our weapons are the ironic mind against the literal: the open mind against the credulous; the courageous pursuit of truth against the fearful and abject forces who would set limits to investigation (and who stupidly claim that we already have all the truth we need). Perhaps above all, we affirm life over the cults of death and human sacrifice and are afraid, not of inevitable death, but rather of a human life that is cramped and distorted by the pathetic need to offer mindless adulation, or the dismal belief that the laws of nature respond to wailings and incantations.”
